Our Musical Journey

Founded by ledgendary bandmaster John M. Long in 2000, the Southeast Alabama Community Band is an important part of the music community in Troy. Musicians from across Alabama and the Florida panhandle travel to Troy each week from January through May to rehearse with an outstanding group of musicians, some of whom have been playing music for more than 70 years. From high school students to retirees, these musicians play a mix of classical, jazz, Broadway, and more. From Gershwin to Sousa, this band puts on a show!

Maggie Hammond

“Music has always played a meaningful role in my life, and I loved my years in band throughout middle and high school. As someone who now works in the tech industry, I didn’t expect to find myself in a large ensemble again. I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to music and to be part of a group that welcomes musicians of all backgrounds.”

Dave (Doc) Kirby started as a full-time lecturer at Troy University in August 2007, after a career as a radio broadcaster and manager that began in 1972. A graduate of Troy State University in 1975 (Bachelor of Music Education) and 1981 (Master of Science in Education, emphasis on Musical Theater), he is still married to his college sweetheart Becky, also a graduate of Troy State (Math and Computers). He also plays trumpet in the Moonlighters Big Band of Dothan (since 2011), and has been working and playing with the Troy University Jazz Ensemble since 2008. “Doc” also travels extensively internationally as a musician with Camp Kirkland’s Metro Big Band out of Nashville, to such places as Poland, Russia, Cuba, Scotland, Hungary, Israel, South Africa, Finland, Portugal, Brazil, Serbia and Croatia, and recorded on two MBB CDs. He has taught for the Hall School of Journalism and Communication at SEGi in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
